The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has unbundled the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) with the establishment of the Nigerian Independent System Operator of Nigeria Limited (NISO).

NERC made this known in an Order dated April 30, 2023 and jointly signed by NERC chairman, Sanusi Garba, and vice chairman, Musiliu Oseni.

By this order, TCN is expected to transfer all market and system operation functions to the new company.

The commission had previously issued transmission service provider (TSP) and system operations (SO) licences to TCN, in accordance with the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.

However, the Electricity Act 2023, which came into effect on June 9, provided clearer guidelines for the incorporation and licensing of the independent system operator (ISO), as well as the transfer of assets and liabilities of TCN’s portion of the ISO.

Therefore, in the circular, the commission ordered the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) to incorporate, unfailingly on May 31, a private company limited by shares under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), 2020.

The company, NERC said, is expected “to carry out the market and system operation functions stipulated in the Electricity Act and the terms and conditions of the system operation licence issued to TCN.

“The name of the company shall, subject to availability at Corporate Affairs Commission, be the Nigerian Independent System Operator of Nigeria Limited (“NISO”),” NERC said.

Citing the object clause of the NISO’s memorandum of association (MOU) as provided in the Electricity Act, NERC said the company shall “hold and manage all assets and liabilities pertaining to market and system operation on behalf of market participants and consumer groups or such stakeholders as the Commission may specify.”

The new ISO, the commission said, will also be responsible for negotiating and entering into a contract for the procurement of ancillary services with independent power producers and successor generation licensees.

Also, it will generally carry out market and system operations functions as specified under the Electricity Act and the terms of its licence in the interest of market participants and system users.

NERC said the company is expected to carry out all market and system operation-related contractual rights and obligations handed over by TCN.

If at the end of the day there's no prepaid meters distributed to every single point of consumption in the entire places where there will be electricity reach, such that if there's no light the electricity company won't make money, then this whole rebranding of corruption will never work. anything that gives room to Estimated billings in this 21st century will not change our electricity production capacity.

From my own view, I think everything should be unbundled, especially the legislative arm of government, those fat cows are useless to the economic growth of this country.

Most Band A customers (both the real and those forced into the band) never still see that acclaimed 20-hour daily electricity supply since dem announce Tariff hike.

A welcome development.

I understand we should keep these politicians on their toes and demand more especially accountability and transparency However, we can be constructive and critical in our arguments and demands also acknowledge when appropriate to move forward.

And may the god of the land, Almighty God punish the generation of people that exploited our situation and introduced Ethnicity Bigotry and Religion to our politics. It has always been there but never been this bad. We have never been this divided. Whoever that is God punish you no matter the money you have.
Every politician in Nigeria have failed us. Everyone of them Including Tinubu, Atiku and Obi. They owe us a working system. Peace!

Reminds me of those time I used to listen to messages from pastors.

One time in his message, Baba Oyedepo, said that one of secret of his success is that whenever he is enbacking on any new project, (e.g his Covenant University), he will first make a list of at least five best performing and Top successful projects of similar nature or kind, understudy all the key contributing strategies to its success and then apply those same strategies to his current project.

There is no need to invent any new wheel.

Understudying five top countries who are already successful in that aspect (e.g corruption fight, stable currency, electricity, industrialization e.t.c.) and then applying their strategies (with consideration for local socio-political and cultural nuances) will give great speed and progress in this country.

(Caveat emptor: I'm not endorsing any cleric here, also don't allow yourself to be deceived into bondage of any of the foreign idolatory abrahamic religion)

National grid should be dissolved. Let states and local government takes charges of their power generation and supply. But corruption and personal interest will not make that to work.

Only the youth can fix this country. All the old men don’t know anything concerning modern society

Why not Scrap this blood suckling TCN and share both assets to the Genco and Disco make we rest. or just Share it to th Discos so they are forced to invest not only in revenue but in transmission.

National grid is the way, states are not xcluded in providing their own power as it stands today, it the responsibility of your own state government to provide its own power if they can afford it. No one is stopping them.
