The governor of Katsina State Dikko Radda says poverty is one of the major factors fueling banditry in the country, citing instances where young people are recruited into crime for as low as N500.

"The issue of the hypothesis behind political motive as responsible for banditry is not true,” the Katsina State governor said on Friday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

“Secondly, what also causes the recruitment of under the logistics services for bandits was a result of poverty because surprisingly with N5,000, N2,000, and N200, you can be able to convince some of these youths to join into this exercise which brings about money,” he insisted.

The governor lamented that banditry which is rife in the North-West region of Nigeria has become a business venture for some persons including government officials.

'Business Venture’
“Now it has turned out to be a business venture. A business venture for the criminals, some people who are in government; and some people who are in security outfits, and some people who are responsible for the day-to-day activities of their people,” the governor said. “These are so many reasons why we are unable to bring banditry to an end.”

In recent years, criminal gangs known locally as bandits have repeatedly raided places mostly in rural areas in the northern region, abducting many and killing others.

President Bola Tinubu has made reducing insecurity one of his priorities. Some have called for negotiations with the bandits as a way to end the menace.

But the Katsina State governor said his government won’t negotiate from a “point of weakness”.

"When you understand the terrain of the forest, and the different camps that we have within those forests… like in Katsina, we have more than 100 different camps that are being led by somebody. So, they have many leaders, many camps and if you’re negotiating with camps A and B and don’t negotiate with camps C and D, it will not bring any lasting peace,” Governor Radda said.

“Even if you negotiate with the leaders, the other followers of the leaders may not necessarily comply with the directives of their leader. So that is what makes the negotiation with the bandits a very difficult task,” he said.

"What I said is that I would never go into negotiations with any criminal at the point of weakness,” the governor added.

What do you expect when the northerners have been brainwashed by religion? Most of the Islamic scholars from that part, teach their subjects intolerance and violence to non Muslims. But, such is not the case with the southern scholars.

Northerners know how to reproduce children like flies and na them kuku be the country's poverty capital. undecided

Chunk problem of Nigeria na from the north. Remove dem from this country and watch how it progresses.

I just dey vex with north like sey I no from north. embarassed

Ask the governor of Katsina State between 1999-2001 why he succumbed to adopting Sani Yerima's unconstitutional sharia criminal laws in Katsina state then.
Bandits are offshoots of Boko Haram fighting for a country to be governed with Sharia criminal laws. Practice of Sharia criminal laws is still official in Katsina State.
The difference between Boko Haram/Bandits and the political/religious leaders in the sharia states is like the difference between six and half a dozen.

This is what happen when u have govt that is not accountable and socially responsible to the welfare of citizenry. Lack of education is the root cause of poverty. Having a committed govt will help to overcome these challenges. Research have shown that people that are victims of this recruitment(bandit) lack education particularly basic education. Educated person cannot risk his life for just five hundred naira because he is optimistic about his future . Education is the only weapon that can end banditry and other vices such as boko haram

1) something should be done to parents who keep producing what they cant fend for.

2) Politicians in the North use the current situation to their advantage,so I don't see them doing anything about it. A very unfortunate situation.

They are obsessed with presidency like it's their right, yet they can't eradicate poverty and illiteracy over there, it's very easy for bandits and boko haram to recruit almajiri with just 500

.Dont these northern (mis)-leaders feel ashamed including their hausa-land-occupying sultan?

As in you claim to be leaders against a people who more or less, have been stripped most human dignity. You have used poverty to finish their dignity and forced your useless religion down their throats with force from childhood.

You pretend to all be righteous while in your heart of hearts, you damn well know that the religion is false. There is no alah punishing anybody anywhere: y'all use it as a mind-control tool to preserve your illegal empire (sultanate and "northern-nigerian" politics).

When u mingle with world powers, don't you guys feel ashamed? I heard some of you traveled to USA to discuss terrorism solutions. E ma a tan'ra yin je, enyin olofo!

I thought Yar’Adua transformed the state into a mega industrial complex with plenty of jobs to keep the young and old busy. Was that not what inspired Obasanjo to make him president in 2007, after the Iwuruwuru INEC election?

What of Buhari who was president for 8 years after his military dictatorship in the 1980s that lasted for two years?

And this RadaRada governor, why is he not employing the people to sweep streets, pack refuse, clean gutters, etc on the N360,000 minimum wage? Abi what is he doing with the federal allocation and IGR? Is he just stealing everything

To imagine that they hated Jonathan for establishing almajiri schools for them

Jonathan: Some Governors Weren’t Happy When I Built Almajiri Schools

The government of Jonathan reportedly built 35 Almajiri schools within his first two years in office.

While delivering Graduation lecture for the participants of Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 14, 2021 at National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja, on Thursday, Jonathan described Almajirai as a time bomb.

He asked governors of the 19 Northern States to modify the system of Almajiri education in a bid to solve a wide range of security challenges facing the country.

Jonathan also asked other governors to work hard because it is not the responsibility of the Federal Government to build and manage schools.

“One thing again, is the issue of unemployment. In Africa, why do we have so many unemployed youths? We do say that the idle hand in the devil’s workshop. There is always a tendency for these idle hands to be used for anti-social activities.”

“One of the ways of tackling unemployment is the issue of education. Just like Nelson Mandela would say that, when you educate people, you give them the power and the weapons to know what’s happening in their environments.

“Education is key, and if we don’t give functional education, not just going to school and acquire certificates, but the education that is functional. If we don’t give a functional education, of course, we will have problems,” the former president said.
