There's a thread on FP about a community in Onistha protesting against their community Primary school being under the lock and key of the Catholic Parish .

The Parish is claiming the school in question was ceded to them by Obi while the community is trying to reverse that travesty by stating the school was never a missionary school but was built from scratch by the state government as far back as in 1979 under the old Anambra state civilian adminstration.

I don't want to believe the handing of the government owned school to the Catholic Diocese of Anambra was done in error.

Rather I see this as both Obi's anti social policies of not investing in education and his religious fanatiscm to abuse his office towards enriching his Catholic church.

How can such an error be made by a whole state government ? And why will the Catholic church in Anambra accept what isn't theirs ?

In his bid to renounce public responsibility in providing education to the masses, Obi decided to hand over this particular known government owned institution to the Catholic church thereby having enough loot to divert to his portfolio.

Pure evil.

This is one way governors push their responsibilities to others, when they give these schools to churches, the maintenance and management of the schools become the responsibilities of the churches, they run such schools like private schools which make them expensive and beyond the reach of the locals.

Did they hand government built and managed schools to the Catholic church ?

The answer is a big no.

Those past governors simply reversed the nationalisation policy of Catholic owned schools back to their owners and not government built schools.

Well you have a point.

Obi handed it over when the Anambra government (his government) could not maintain them and they were a mess as confirmed by a lady on a different thread.

As a result, fees were bumped up and some as high as 1million naira per term.

Quality education is not cheap and far beyond the reach of the average Anambran. This was basically segregation

This is utter rubbish.

So you hand over public owned institution to a missionary body that profits from same school?

And this was done free of charge !

Why didn't Obi liquidate the school outright instead of handing such vital asset that he knows will not offer free public service ?

Do Catholic schools offer free tution ?

And what is so difficult in reviving and maintaining ordinary primary school?

The truth is that Obi did not see public funded schools as a necessity hence why he never built any and the few existing ones he was giving the Catholic church free of charge so they can anniont him as their knight .

Obi just de collect back to front with his Nairaland mod surrogate not able to avert the catastrophic imagine damage he as been undergoing all month long this period

Ndi Anambra refuse to talk n expose the ineptitude n failures of Peter Obi but those that cannot take the lies n image laundry n the relentless fraudulent packaging are now speaking out gradually.

Next it will be rampaging insecurity that pervade his 8 years with relentless kidnapping n armed robber before Obiano stern the tide.

From their Ndi Anambra will demand accountability for Obi investing state money into a bank he chairs, ₦4 billion into Orient Refinery that is yet to produce a single litre of fuels 14 years after it was commissioned, billions invested in brewery now worth next to nothing, state fund to build himself malls in Abuja b PH. The list of Peter Obi fraud is endless but let's keep pretending he is a saint as we are not ready.

The nationalisation of missionary schools was carried out in post war Nigeria by the Gowon or Murtala regime(not sure) who for some reason saw the Vatican as an ally to the rogue biafran rebel government.

This was done not only to Catholic schools but all other missionary schools and it wasn't limited only to the present day SE.

The post war military junta saw the Vatican as a parallel government especially in the SE and the Vatican's staunch support for Biafra during the war was enough reason for the post war military junta to nationalise missionary schools so as to check the influence of the Vatican especially in SE Nigeria. Though the nationalisation of missionary schools was not limited to that of only Catholic owned schools as other churches like Baptist, Presbyterian and Anglican churches had their schools commandeered . Also, the nationalisation policy was being extended to other sectors as well which came to a head during the Murtala and then Obasanjo military juntas.

It was until post 1999 that the federal and state governments began a policy of returning these schools back to their missionaries.

So the process of nationalising missionary schools was not done in secrecy and so there is no excuse why Obi will hand over state property to the Catholic diocese in Anambra .

It makes no sense until you see that Obi was trying to absolve his government from managing public schools

And I dare say this is not an isolated incidence. The current state government must review all the schools handed over by Obi to the Catholic church and reverse those that were not owned by the church and fine the church appropriately.

Problem is, when the government embarked on mission school takeover in 1973, we had lots of oil money. BY 2006, many of those schools were becoming an albatross on many state government's heads, so many of them started handing them over back to missions

Not just Obi, many governors (I recall Lagos, Ogun, etc) did the same

See, many states cannot afford good quality schools. Check the budget for education for many states, and you would weep. And that is before corruption comes in to eat more of it.

That's why even as far back as the 1980's, many government schools looked wretched. At some point whoever thought taking over too many mission schools was a good idea must have been regretting.

Rubbish

The reason for nationalising missionary schools was because the military govt saw the Vatican as being too influential among the Ibos and also the church being a major ally to the biafran govt.

But Obi had money to invest in his brewery and pandora account but nothing for Anambra children.

This is the Messiah you want to foist own the polity.

Obi should come and dash NNPC and every asset to his Catholic church now that we are broke .

I'm sure the takeover of Anglican and methodist and other demoninational schools by Gowon's government had a lot to do with these denominations being run by the Vatican?

Ah well, intriguing thoughts.

It is kind of a cold fact tha tmost states have between 100-200 bn naira to spend on education

Many of them have state universities, which on a good day, need triple that amount in yearly spendings, then they have to spend more and more on primary and secondary schools.

That's why government run schools look run down.

I don't know why Jack took over mission schools...but I know his decision was wrong long term. He should have left them to the missions to run....and used our excess money to build new schools.

Well, there are still a lot of catholic schools anyways, though.even after the takeover. Looks like the vatican had a lot of heft.

Plus, why take over other schools? They weren't catholic. I doubt that Gowon did not know the difference between catholic and non catholic...as a Protestant believer of the anglican variety.

(At the end, it really doesn't matter).
