Benin Traditional Council Suspends Five Chiefs For Pledging Alliance To Ooni by ijustdey: 10:03pm On Apr 27
Five Benin traditional functionaries have been suspended from their roles for engaging in what the palace described as sacrilegious conduct against Benin customs.

The Benin Traditional Council announced their suspension in a statement signed by the Iyase of Benin, Chief Sam Igbe, on Saturday.

The statement noted that the affected functionaries visited the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, where they falsely claimed to be emissaries of the Oba of Benin and rendered inaccurate and disjointed account of the connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife.

PUNCH Online earlier reported that representatives from the Benin Kingdom, paid a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to affirm that Ile-Ife is the ancestral home of the Benin people.

In a now-viral video capturing the exchange, one of the emissaries told the Ooni that despite contrary narratives circulating online, their collective understanding has always recognised Ile-Ife as their ancestral homeland.

“We have always been told that Ife is our home,” the emissary said.

However, the Benin Traditional Council has distanced itself from the representatives whom it described as “a group of self-serving traditional functionaries from Benin.”

The statement reads, “The attention of the Benin Traditional Council has been drawn to video clips circulating on social media in which a group of self-serving traditional functionaries from Benin engaged themselves in a sacrilegious show of shame and falsehood against the Benin Custom.

In the said clip, the individuals who have been identified as Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre (Ihogbe), S.E. Aigbiremwen, Efesieoghoba (Ogbelaka) and two other Ogbelaka functionaries identified as Ogbeide Osagie and Osamudiame Edo were in the presence of the Ooni of Ife, falsely claiming to be emissaries of the Omo N’ObaN’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare Il, Oba of Benin. These individuals not only declared themselves subjects of the Ooni but also rendered inaccurate and disjointed accounts of the connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife.

“While the BTC does not wish to be drawn to restating the well-known connection between the two thrones of the Oba of Benin and the Ooni of Ife, the general public is urged to disregard the inaccurate accounts rendered by the ill-bred individuals named above. For the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever, the BTC advise the general public to avail themselves of the official account of the connection between the two ancient monarchies as contained in the authoritative book titled “I Remain, Sir, Your Obedient Servant” authored by His Royal Majesty, Oba Erediauwa, Oba of Benin (1979 — 2016), published by Spectrum Books/Safari Books, 2004 at pages 205-212.”

Describing the conduct of the representatives as sacrilegious, the council advised the public to steer clear of them.

“The BTC considers the conduct of these functionaries as inappropriate, sacrilegious and calculated to ridicule traditional history and to bring disrepute to Benin custom. Consequently, on the authority of the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare Il, Oba of Benin the Prescribed Authority over Benin Custom, the BTC hereby announce the suspension of the individuals mentioned above from their role as Benin traditional functionaries.

The general public is advised to refrain from having anything to do with them as traditional functionaries in Benin kingdom throughout their suspension”, the statement added.

Their problem. Would the council of Benin chiefs also suspend Oba of Benin too for saying he is the son of Oranmiyan and Grandson of Oduduwa in his coronation video below? He also said Oranmiyan established Obaship in Benin cool

The Bini are a different people Ogiamen with a language called Edoid.
However, their Oba was sired by a Yoruba man called Oranmiyan which the king himself confirmed.

Yoruba to the World. The OBA of Benin Ewuare II himself attested to the fact they are from Yoruba land.

Where does that word "Oba" come from. It's clearly Yoruba

Oduduwa claimed he came from the the sky gods (The Benin kings aka the Ogisos aka the sky gods). Your people were confused and thought he said he came from the sky. That's why till this day you guys say Oduduwa descended from heaven, the sky. The sky gods were the Ogiso's, the Benin kings.

According to the Ogisos/Ogiamen, Oduduwa is a Yoruba man. They have zero record of anyone called Oduduwa or erakadehran.

There are also NO historical books/article that mentioned Oduduwa coming from bini. It's a recent creation from people trying to distort history.

Oduduwa is an Oke-Ora man just east of Ife. He came from an hilly side dwelling in Ora.

Four things are very clear;
1. That those individuals that visited Ooni's palace are indeed traditional functionaries of the Benin kingdom.
2. That the suspension signifies the fact that they are indeed serving royal chiefs of the Benin kingdom.
3. That the Benin kingdom are hiding some truths from the people of Benin.
4. That the suspension would not deter more people close to the palace to come out with more truths as the people truly know their own history.

How can the oba palace suspend fake chiefs?

They must be chiefs to be suspended.

And they simply departed from the lies the oba of Benin started telling his people immediately after Midwest broke out western Nigeria to seek legitimacy.

Oba of Benin called himself son of Oranmiyan, since he descended from Oranmiyan. Or is Oranmiyan an Ibo man?

Try to seperate the Oba of Benin (Royal) from the Ogiamen/Ogiso (original Bini people), then maybe you will be able to think properly.

There is no issue here, the thread says "Benin Traditional Council Suspends Five Chiefs For Pledging Alliance To Ooni"

Obviously, there is an internal tussle.
Who is the Traditional Council answerable to? Who is the OBA of Benin answerable to?

Is Oba of Benin a Yoruba man? If he's a Yoruba man, and his origin is traceable to Ile Ife, is he answerable to Ooni of Life?

The entire Benin is ruled by OBA Ewuare II his Royal highness. Ooni of Ife is the king over all Yorubas
Long live the king
Case closed wink

It's laughable that the press conference is referring to a book published in 2004 . That book was authored by the same conflicted author that the original and true historical account displeases . He wrote what suits his agenda and narrative to protect the future of his throne especially when he was being challenged to leave the throne and return to Ile Ife. Smh. It's not credible account of history and therefore not an authoritative account but in conflict with the evidences that abound and well preserved authoritative historical books.

This is too low and can't stand physical and oral traditions that preserved the history of how the Yoruba Ile Ife Prince founded the Bini royalty. For that reason till date, the Bini royalty is Yoruba and it's not going to be revised in 2004 nor till eternity.

The Yoruba Internet warriors are a big part of the problem.

There is nothing wrong if Oba of Benin traces his lineage back to Ife. Both the Oba and the Ooni are comfortable with the true story.

But this new Internet generation have turned the whole thing into 'Yoruba owns Edo', 'Edo is Yoruboid' etc None of these is correct.

Edos are a proud people, with a distinct culture and civilisation. They're not Yoruboid and don't want to hear that nonsense.

I don't see why the Oba having Yoruba lineage should be a problem. If anything, it is something to be celebrated and honoured by him and the Ooni and used to bring their 2 people together.

The Oba of Benin is probably concerned that his people will hold his self-confessed Yoruba lineage against him. That is understandable in the context of petty political and civic rivalries that Africans in particular excel at.

People, particularly some of these Yoruba internet youths should butt out of this matter and let Edo people be.
