Based on the confirmed leads, the Central Crime Branch sleuths on Monday raided a house and arrested the suspect.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) has confiscated contraband worth a staggering (2 Billion naira) by arresting a Nigerian national, in what has been described as the biggest-ever drug haul in Bengaluru.

The seized contraband includes 16 kg of MDMA crystals and 500 grams of cocane,. Bengaluru Police Commissioner told a press conference on Tuesday.

This was by far the biggest seizure of illicit drugs in Bengaluru. And it was also the first time that such a large quantity of cocaine had been confiscated, the commisioner added.

The arrested suspect, 44-year-old Leonard Okwudili, arrived in India on a business visa and lived in eastern Bengaluru for a year.

The drugs were supposed to be sold to a very select clientele during the New Year's celebrations. He was planning to supply the contraband to NYE parties, college students and techies, police investigations reveal.

According to police, Okwudili had wide contacts with drug dealers from Delhi and Mumbai, and sourced the contraband from them. Police believe he used courier services and public transport to move the drugs around. One of his common tactics was to conceal the drugs inside packets of churidar sets, bedspreads as well as soap and chocolate boxes.

The CCB raided his house after receiving a definite tip-off, Dayananda said.

Police have now summoned the landlord and taken his statement about Okwudili's background. They are also investigating if the landlord was involved.

A case has been registered at the Ramamurthy Nagar police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The police commissioner has announced a cash reward of equivalent 58 million naira to the CCB's Anti Narcotics Wing that carried out the raid.

Mumbai: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs has arrested a Nigerian woman for allegedly trying to smuggle heroin worth Rs 2 crore from Mumbai to Delhi. Sources said this drug was meant for new year celebration.

Acting on specific intelligence the AIU intercepted accused Victoria Okafor, who was travelling from Mumbai to Delhi early morning on Saturday.

At first she denied carrying drugs, but upon being frisked the officials found a stash containing 20 capsules purported to be heroin, hidden in her brassier. Once it was confirmed that the contraband was a narcotic substance, she was detained. During interrogation she admitted to being aware of carrying drugs.

She said the drugs were handed over to her by one Onye in Nallasopara, adding that she carried the contraband for Rs 50,000. Her lawyer Prabhakar Tripathi, however, claimed that his client is innocent and that under duress the agency took her statement. He added that Okafor was unaware that the parcel contained narcotic substances. — Ahmed Ali
