Hello.
I will make this simple and short.
Do you know with about N100k, you can start a Catfish or Tilapia farming business ( right inside your compound ) and make a profit margin of 200% - 350%+ within a span of 5 - 6 months?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
African catfish (Clarias Gariepinus) farming could be a profitable business and could be an important source of protein in diet. Catfish is a warm water fish and can be grown in natural ponds, fish tanks, and in backyard ponds for profit. They reach a marketable size of 1kg to 2.5kg within 4 to 8 months.
The ultimate goal as a fish farmer is to maximize your investments; at the end of the day, when you calculate feeding costs, logistics costs, maintenance and payment to employees/contractors, you should make a profit.
There are several factors that affect the growth of your catfish. Growth of your fish and profit will depend on how efficiently you manage your farm.
Your profits from a catfish farm will depend largely on how fast you grow them to marketable size. The faster they grow, the sooner you can harvest them for profit.
---------------------------------------------
Cost of Setting up Backyard Fish Farming
---------------------------------------------
Our 5 X 11 ft Reinforced Plastic Tarpaulin pond construction : N100,000 (Your 1 time cost)
Consultancy / Training: N30,000

500 Juvenile : N15,000
Feeding: N50,000 ( 5 months)
Treatment : N10,000 ( 5 months)

--------------------------------------------
SELLING / PROFIT
--------------------------------------------
Assuming they are well raised and you have a very low death rate or mortality rate (about 5%, which means of the starting 500 fishes, 25 die along the way), you can expect each of your 475 surviving fishes to grow to a minimum of 1kg each, giving you a total weight of 475 kg.
The current market price for 1kg of fish is N800.
Estimate of what you can generate in sales is N380, 000 (475 X N800).

Let say the construction and consultancy with training (N130,000.00) is a one time cost.

500 Juvenile + Feeding + Treatment = N75,000.00 ( in 5 month)

Selling = N380,000.00

You do the calculation.

You can't start a good catfish business with that sum of money and believe me if you haven't started hatching your own fingerlings instead of buying from other farmers then you haven't started catfish business.

I use to be in your same school of thought some months / year back.
I started with N75k ( setup + 500 Juvenile) before the 4th month, i regretted why i purchased just 500 juvenile.

Today am a proud owner of a cat and Tilapia fish form value valued at over N3.5m.

Lol.....Bro catfish business is not as easy as most information marketers like you make it seem,I will advice anyone going into it to be financially buoyant because those animals consume alot and also factors like good electricity supply, good water supply should be available.I am talking from experience as I own a large catfish farm.

Quite the negativity. You can't be holier than the pope, you negativities people, always quick to point out the reasons things won't work. Are you the one doing his farming for him too? You can't be holier than the pope

Rather than consult or ask questions they'll run and blacklist the business. You see them roaming about the streets everyday after sunset cause dem no GRE work. Dem also refuse to take up opportunities, they seldom blame people, life,God, environment everything for their failures.

No way 15000 will feed 500 catfish. It's impossible. That's about N30 per fish to 1kg?

kindly take your time to read thru before you comment sir. What you have on the post is N50,000 not N15,000.
You are mistaking the cost of 500 Juvy fish ( N15,000) for the feeding.

Fcr for the most efficient feeds which is obviously foreign is 1kg feed to get 0.9kg

Meaning to use 500kg feed will get about 450kg weight all things been equal. If the fish is fed further to more weight, the Fcr increases.

Summary for 500 African catfish
500kg feed to get 450kg weight or 0.9kg per fish

500kg weight should be about 20 bags of 25kg feed and at an average of 8000 per bag, my brother, the cost of feeding is well over a 100k

8000x20 bags = over 160k for 500 fishes

Your analysis is noted.

N. B:
1.You are buying a Juvenile ( 8 weeks old that is 2 months out already) .
2. I recommend Livestock Feed ( It's a local product with a brand name and the average cost is *N6,000)

3. Brake down for 500 Juvenile catfish feeding.

1st 6 weeks = 1 bag ( a bag is 15 kg)
2nd 4 weeks = 1 Bag
3rd 3 weeks = 1 Bag
4th 2 weeks = 1.5 Bag
5th 3 week = 4 bags

18 week = 8 Bags X N6000 = N48,000.
At the 18th week, your fish will be 18+8 = 26 weeks old ( 6 months) .
You should be looking at Minimum of 1.3 - 1.5kg if not 2kg each for your catfish.

While feeding your fish, you have to be patient, if not, you will waste 30 - 40 feed.

This is practical my brother, not theory...

We have been using the above formula for 4 years running, and getting amazing result.

Hmmmm, I rest my case. Some of us on this thread are not novices. The other guys BlackAlbinoo and Sirafoy that commented and were turned down has some point.

All I know is that I used about 165 bags of fish feed to raise 1500 fish to average 1.5kg weight.

I also used over 300 bags to raise about 2000 catfish to average 2kg weight under 6 months.

1. Bros we are learn everyday.
I use to be in the school of sending much on feeding...
I said just the same to someone who told me I can cut my feeding my 55 - 60 % and get the same result.

Our target is to get the fish up to 1kg and sell...

2. Do u feed your fish personally or someone else handle it for u.
Below is a pic of how our feed are portioned..

Why I raised them above 1kg is because it's for personal family consumption.
I raised them in my house so it's either me or my wife that fed them then.
I think the best way out for raising fish is compounding your feed and pelletizing it.
If you compare fish and poultry, poultry is easily more profitable but easier to sell since they are fewer ponds than pen and takes longer to reach maturity.

500 of our fish from Juvy stage to 1kg consume 8 bags tops.

Those same fish will consume more than 30 - 40 bags from 1kg to 2 kg
That is X 4 or 5 ..

For family consumption, it's a personal thing...
But for business, cost is all that matters...

Oga stop talking trash pls!
You are promoting false information.

There is no feed that can convert 8(15kg bags = 120kg) into 500kg (500 1kg fishes).
No matter the supplement you use, atleast 30 bags minimum (that's even generous)

Don't argue with me and keep your voodoo techniques to yourself.
For the sake of people that you will talk to in the future, pls enlighten yourself on feed conversion ratios (FCR) and mathematics

Can this be true
50k to feed 500 fish for 5-6 months
How can you feed them to satisfaction with one bag for first week & still do same the second week ,
U mean they are not growing

Please 50k on feed will never give you 1kg each of 475 fish at 5 months old.
Even if you formulate or compounded the feeds yourself.. Or may be u use free maize, soya from your farm
No magic can do that

Ok will the fish gain weight without eating
475kg means you have fed them at least 475kg let us assumed they rate all the feed & converted all to weight & they did not shit or poopoo abi
So a bag of feed is 15kg
How many 15kg is in 475kg...475kg/15kg =31.66 bags
So you must use 31 and half bags
If each bag is 6k as you said
31.5bags will cost ..31.5x6k=189k
Except there are other information you have refuse to expose
Please go back & make correction
Nobody is above mistake
1st 6 weeks = 1 bag ( a bag is 15 kg)
2nd 4 weeks = 1 Bag
3rd 3 weeks = 1 Bag
4th 2 weeks = 1.5 Bag
5th 3 week = 4 bags
