Which Processor Did You Prefer Between AMD And Intel With Reasons by Sunymoore(m): 4:47pm On Nov 01, 2012
When choosing a computer CPU it usually
comes down to two choices: AMD or Intel.
The CPU wars between these two
corporations have been going on for years,
even resulting in antitrust charges filed
against Intel several times. Both companies
have created some amazing and some
unsuccessful products and both have
followers (aka fanboys) among the techies.
However no matter what company you
prefer, you have to agree that competition
is great for the consumers since it drives
the prices down and promotes innovation.
You will find some more information about
AMD and Intel, comparisons between
specific CPUs throughout the years.
About Intel
Intel (Integrated Electronics Corporation)
is the world's largest CPU manufacturer. It
was founded in 1968 and is based in Santa
Clara, California (US). Intel is the creator
of the x86 CPU architecture which is now
used in the majority of PCs (and since
2006 Macs as well). Intel's domination in
the x86 CPU market led to charges of
antitrust violations in US, EU, Japan and
South Korea over the years.
About AMD
AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) was
founded in 1969 and is based in
Sunnyvale, California (US). It is the second
largest supplier of x86 architecture CPUs
and, after a merger with ATI in 2006, the
third largest manufacturer of GPUs (after
Intel and nVidia). It is considered the
underdog of the CPU market due to
revenue and market share several times
smaller than Intel's.
So Nairalanders which of the processor did you prefer and your reasons.

For me i say Intel is better than AMD because
you get more for your money. You may
see a 6 core AMD Cheaper than a quad
core intel but you need to look at other
things. First of all Intel has better
construction of their CPU's along with
many other Technologys such as
Hyper-Threading,Turbo Boost. So if
you have a Quad core Intel with Hyper-
Threading and Turbo Boost, You get 8-
Threads and it OCz Itself determined
on cpu usage. I will say AMD is
cheaper but i would only recommend
AMD for casual PC usage unless you
feel like spending $200 min to get a
good AMD for gaming but at that Price
you might as well get Intel. If your only
into spending $100-$150 then get
AMD because there is no point for Intel
Unless your doing alot of CPU eating
programs at one time. Now if you
disagree with me Fine. i just want to
put my opinion out there for others
making a decision.
This is semi off topic but i also would
rather a Nvidia over ATI for some of
the same reasons as i like Intel More. I
would go the extra $300 to get a
gaming pc with Nvidia and Intel that
will last you alot longer than the AMD
to save you money in the end.
In summary Intel is better for Gaming and Vedio Editing.

If you benchmark the latest amd processors especially the apu series, you'll see that amd has upped their game. The 2012 series of processors produce less heat and conserve more power.

i'm not any fan just happy with the one that serves me well. Just pointing out that the new amd chipsets are better and 2x functional

I say, I prefer Intel to AMD. The AMD in my first PC had the issue of over-heating which really freaked me out.

not u alone bro, i too had the same problem with my AMD, but mine the pc is even hibernating due to over heating, i had to get a cooling pad before it was some how OK. but my new intel i7 chaii is a new world

I find it really amazing that peeps always keep ranting about how terrible the AMD CPUs are....over-heating...crashes...etc. If the are that bad, why do OEM still use them? Pricing you say? Tell me, whats the difference in price between an Intel And AMD CPU based, like spec'd, same range computer?

I used a laptop with some AMD CPU for years...not a single fault attributed to the chip. Unless I want to blame the scratches on the screen on the CPU! cheesy Majority of those that scream foul at AMD CPUs only do so from online reviews and not personal experience. I see people quoting that the Intel CPUs are faster, and I cant help but wonder what they really need the extra clock/cycle speed for when the most they use a computer for is movies and some spreadsheet!!!

hmm, guy, OEM use AMD for it cheap price, n NO super PC will run on AMD chip cause of it over heating. guy intel cost twice as AMD chip wo, google n see. am nt a simple user, meaning i edit and watch HD clips which requires a good processor Like intel i7

Mine is a personal experience and the first laptop I ever had.

Because you use yours for only those doesn't mean other people do same.

So OEMs, because of pricing, would risk their market image and use relatively bad CPUs? Twice as much on the CPU cost you say? But I refer to the pricing of the computer and not the chip in this statement:
Maleeq: If the are that bad, why do OEM still use them? Pricing you say? Tell me, whats the difference in price between an Intel And AMD CPU based, like spec'd, same range computer?
Or say, if an Intel Laptop costs 100K, would a similar spec'd AMD equivalent be 50K?

And you still go further in ascertain my "claim", You don't necessarily need a superior CPU to watch HD content...I've got full HD content on my phone too! cheesy So, my phone's ARM CPU is better than the AMD, yeah?

The arguments over which is best is going to be endless. You are a heavy user, fine, go for the intel. But writing off AMD entirely is wrong. I used an AMD based laptop for years, thats enough conviction I ever would need for its reliability. Arguably, Intel is better, but AMD still gets the job done at humanly-impossible-to-tell speed difference. (don't quote the text book benchmark results here, unless I would ask you to physically identify the difference between 1msec and 0.5msec grin ).

User needs is paramount whilst considering economics too. Best is relative if you ask me. Its like taking a kia-picanto to a Formula-1 track...its would left behind before the race even starts (synonymous to a heavy user on AMD )
or
getting a formula-1 car to drive my grandmother from her house to the market and back (synonymous to basic user using an over-kill intel CPU for tasks sufficiently handled by AMD )

*clears throat* why OEM use AMD chip in some of their sys. is because the system is a lower standard pc like HP 530 or smaller systems design for surfing n spread sheet editing, n mostly other spec of this kind are 512 or 1 GIG RAM, 100-160 HDD, 64MB Graphics card and so on. for sys. price let assume the same other spec but different CPU, if the one with AMD costs 2k thhen the one wif Intel will cost 4K. for hd content look @ d image below n see that all my six cores r rose upto 94% if na AMD it go catch fire wink
of course if u are a simple uuser like maleeg then go for AMD but if u are a hard core user like me then go for INtel. cox there is no need a spread sheeet editor to be using intel.
